The PRS Silver Sky is the result of a close collaboration between Grammy Award-winning guitarist John Mayer and Paul Reed Smith. The Silver Sky is a vintage-inspired instrument that feels familiar but is also PRS through and through. PRS Silver Sky Moc Sand Satin Maple 2022

De headstock is gebaseerd op de klassieke PRS vorm maar dan in spiegelbeeld, dit is gedaan om de gitaar geschikt te maken voor Mayers speelstijl, maar het heeft ook als voordeel dat de snaarlengte achter de topkam langer is waardoor de gitaar beter in stemming blijft. De stemmechanieken zijn traditioneel en vintage-style maar wel met het Locking ontwerp van PRS. De halsvorm is gebaseerd op die instrumenten uit 1963/1964 en de toets heeft een radius van 7,25". Als je de hals vastpakt voelt het dan ook meteen goed. 

Net als de stemmechanieken neemt de stalen tremolo het klassieke ontwerp en voegt hier een PRS tremolo arm en "Gen III knife-edge" schroeven aan toe. De brug van de Silver Sky is zo afgesteld dat de tremolo alleen omlaag gaat. Doordat de brug in contact blijft met de body is de gitaar ook akoestisch luider wat de signaal/ruis verhouding van de single-coil elementen ten goede komt. De 635JM single-coil elementen klinken rond en vol met een muzikaal hoog dat nooit schel of priemend is.

Deze Silver Sky uit 2022 is bespeeld, maar ziet er nog steeds zeer netjes uit. De matte lak van de body en de hals zijn door het bespelen her en der glanzend geworden, en verder vinden we enkele kleine dings op de body en hals. De gitaar wordt met TFOA paspoort geleverd in een gigbag.

The headstock is based on the classic PRS shape but in reverse, this is done to make the guitar suitable for Mayer's playing style, but it also has the advantage of a longer string length behind the nut, which makes the guitar stay in tune better. The tuners are traditional and vintage-style but with PRS's Locking design. The neck shape is based on those instruments from 1963/1964 and the fingerboard has a radius of 7.25". When you grab the neck, it immediately feels good.


Like the tuners, the steel tremolo takes the classic design and adds a PRS tremolo arm and "Gen III knife-edge" screws. The bridge of the Silver Sky is adjusted so that the tremolo only goes down. Because the bridge remains in contact with the body, the guitar is also acoustically louder, which benefits the signal/noise ratio of the single-coil elements. The 635JM single-coil elements sound round and full with a musical high that is never shrill or piercing.


This Silver Sky from 2022 has been played, but still looks very neat. The matte lacquer of the body and neck have become shiny here and there due to playing, and we also find a few small dings on the body and neck. The guitar is TFOA passport delivered in a gig bag.

Die Kopfplatte ist der klassischen PRS-Form nachempfunden, allerdings in umgekehrter Form. Dies dient dazu, die Gitarre an Mayers Spielstil anzupassen, hat aber auch den Vorteil, dass die Saitenlänge hinter dem Sattel länger ist und die Gitarre dadurch besser gestimmt bleibt. Die Stimmmechaniken sind traditionell und im Vintage-Stil, jedoch mit dem Locking-Design von PRS. Die Halsform ist an die Instrumente von 1963/1964 angelehnt und das Griffbrett hat einen Radius von 7,25 Zoll. Wenn man den Hals greift, fühlt es sich sofort richtig an.


Wie die Stimmmechaniken übernimmt auch das Stahltremolo das klassische Design und verfügt zusätzlich über einen PRS-Tremoloarm und Gen III-Messerkantenschrauben. Die Brücke des Silver Sky ist so eingestellt, dass das Tremolo nur nach unten geht. Da der Steg weiterhin Kontakt zum Korpus hat, ist die Gitarre auch akustisch lauter, was dem Signal-Rausch-Verhältnis der Single-Coil-Tonabnehmer zugutekommt. Die 635JM Single-Coil-Tonabnehmer klingen rund und voll mit einem musikalischen High-End, das nie schrill oder durchdringend ist.


Mit diesem Silver Sky 2022 wurde schon gespielt, aber er sieht immer noch sehr ordentlich aus. Der matte Lack von Korpus und Hals ist durch das Spielen stellenweise glänzend geworden und auch ein paar kleine Dellen finden wir an Korpus und Hals. Die Gitarre wird mit einem TFOA-Pass in einer Gigbag geliefert.
