Martin Custom Shop DSS 2018

Martin presenteerde deze DSS in 2018 op de NAMM-show als antwoord op een gedurfde vraag: kan een dreadnought zowel extreem licht zijn als een volle, krachtige toon produceren? De luthiers van de Custom Shop gingen de uitdaging aan en slaagden met vlag en wimpel. Van deze bijzondere serie zijn slechts 40 exemplaren gebouwd, en dit is nummer 27. Het slope shoulder-ontwerp verwijst naar de vroegste dreadnoughts uit de jaren '30, maar dan uitgevoerd met de nieuwste innovaties die Martin te bieden heeft.

Om dit lage gewicht te bereiken zonder in te boeten op stevigheid en klank, heeft Martin voor deze gitaar een titanium trussrod, carbon en titanium stemmechanieken, en een brugplaat van carbon en VTS Adirondack gebruikt. Ook de Liquidmetal brugpinnen zijn bijzonder: ze zijn gemaakt van een hightech zirconium-compound dat sustain, harmonischen en volume met enkele decibellen verhoogt. De gitaar is bovendien met traditionele hide glue geconstrueerd, wat de resonantie en warmte van de klank ten goede komt.

Het mahonie voor de klankkast en het Adirondack sparren bovenblad vormen een klasse apart. De mahonie levert warmte en diepte, terwijl het Adirondack bovenblad zorgt voor helderheid, projectie en een open karakter. Het resultaat is een gitaar die moeiteloos snel flatpicking aankan zonder ook maar een noot te verliezen, maar ook complex akkoordwerk met gemak verwerkt. De strakke bas en enorme dynamische range maken deze DSS geschikt voor elk speelstijl, van intiem fingerpicking tot krachtig strummen. De Modified Low Oval hals met Performance Taper biedt een prettig en vertrouwd speelgevoel, ideaal voor zowel lange sessies als intensief spel. De ebben toets met 42-style snowflake inleg en Europees gevlamd esdoorn binding geven de gitaar een verfijnde uitstraling die past bij het vakmanschap dat in elk detail is verwerkt.

De klankkast en het bovenblad hebben lichte speelsporen en enkele dings, net als de achterzijde van de hals. Tevens is de oorspronkelijk gemonteerde carbon slagplaat vervangen door een effen zwart exemplaar. Dit is een instrument dat niet alleen technisch indrukwekkend is, maar ook gewoon heerlijk speelt en klinkt!

Martin presented this DSS at the 2018 NAMM show in response to a daring question: can a dreadnought be both extremely light and produce a full, powerful tone? The luthiers at the Custom Shop took on the challenge and succeeded with flying colors. Only 40 of this special series were built, and this is number 27. The slope-shoulder design harks back to the earliest dreadnoughts from the 1930s, but features the latest innovations Martin has to offer.

To achieve this low weight without sacrificing strength and tone, Martin used a titanium truss rod, carbon and titanium tuners, and a bridgeplate made of carbon and VTS Adirondack. The Liquidmetal bridge pins are also special: they are made of a high-tech zirconium compound that increases sustain, harmonics, and volume by several decibels. The guitar is also constructed with traditional hide glue, which enhances the resonance and warmth of the tone.

The mahogany back and sides of the guitar and the Adirondack spruce top are in a class of their own. The mahogany delivers warmth and depth, while the Adirondack top provides clarity, projection, and an open character. The result is a guitar that effortlessly handles fast flatpicking without dropping a single note, but also handles complex chord work with ease. The tight bass and enormous dynamic range make this DSS suitable for any playing style, from intimate fingerpicking to powerful strumming. The Modified Low Oval neck with Performance Taper offers a comfortable and familiar playing feel, ideal for both long sessions and intensive playing. The ebony fingerboard with 42-style snowflake inlays and European flamed maple binding give the guitar a refined appearance that befits the craftsmanship that is incorporated into every detail.

The back and sides show light playwear and a few dings, as does the back of the neck. The original carbon pickguard has also been replaced with a solid black one. This is an instrument that is not only technically impressive, but also simply plays and sounds wonderful!

Auch die Liquidmetal-Stegstecker sind etwas Besonderes: Sie bestehen aus einer Hightech-Zirkonium-Verbindung, die Sustain, Obertöne und Lautstärke um mehrere Dezibel erhöht. Die Gitarre ist zudem mit traditionellem Knochenleim verleimt, was die Resonanz und die Wärme des Klangs verstärkt.

Der Mahagoni-Korpus und die Adirondack-Fichtendecke dieser Gitarre sind einzigartig. Das Mahagoni sorgt für Wärme und Tiefe, während die Adirondack-Fichtendecke Klarheit, Projektion und einen offenen Klangcharakter beisteuert. Das Ergebnis ist eine Gitarre, die mühelos schnelles Flatpicking ohne Tonverlust meistert und auch komplexe Akkorde mit Leichtigkeit bewältigt. Der straffe Bass und der enorme Dynamikumfang machen diese DSS für jeden Spielstil geeignet, vom gefühlvollen Fingerpicking bis zum kraftvollen Strumming. Der modifizierte, flache Ovalhals mit Performance Taper bietet ein komfortables und vertrautes Spielgefühl, ideal für lange Sessions und intensives Spielen. Das Ebenholzgriffbrett mit Snowflake-Inlays im 42er-Stil und das Binding aus europäischem Riegelahorn verleihen der Gitarre ein edles Aussehen, das der in jedem Detail steckenden Handwerkskunst gerecht wird.

Boden und Zargen weisen leichte Gebrauchsspuren und einige kleine Dellen auf, ebenso die Halsrückseite. Das originale Carbon-Schlagbrett wurde durch ein schwarzes ersetzt. Dieses Instrument ist nicht nur technisch beeindruckend, sondern spielt und klingt einfach wunderbar!
