Sustainable
The first thing you notice about Cole Clark guitars is of course their unique appearance and that is mainly due to tonewoods like Blackwood, Bunya, Queensland Maple and Rive She Oak. These tonewoods are used for a good reason, because Cole Clark has been showing for years that it is possible to make great sustainable guitars.
Most guitar builders usually go for the 'standard' tonewoods such as Sitka spruce, Mahogany and Rosewood. But these types of wood are becoming more and more scarce Mind you: that's only partly due to the guitar industry, because for a guitar you don't need that much wood. Allegedly 120 full grown spruces could be enough to provide all guitar builders in North America with enough wood for their tops. The furniture industry and other wood processors are much bigger culprits that cause some woodtypes to deplete quickly.
Nonetheless, Cole Clark decided to look for his guitar woods much closer to home, with some very surprising results! He discovered Satin Box as a perfect option for a fretboard, because it sits nicely between rosewood and ebony in terms of sound and gives a very beautiful, warm, woody tone. Blackwood on the back and sides gives a delicious punch that resembles Koa.
The unknown Queensland Maple? Has all the good things Mahogany has given guitars for decades. All these tonewoods are sustainable alternatives from Australia and because they grow at Cole Clarks doorstep, he can offer his guitars at a very affordable pricepoint. Wrapped in a beautiful satin finish, Cole Clark gives his instruments a wonderful natural look in which you can still see the special trees they are made from. With a Cole Clark guitar you really have something unique in your hands!
Amplified: great!
Of course building a guitar sustainably is not enough, they also need to sound good and play well. Especially on stage. Thanks to a unique 3-way system, Cole Clark guitars sound fantastic when amplified. This system combines a piezo, a sensor and a microphone, ensuring that when you plug in your acoustic guitar it still sounds like an acoustic guitar. Artists like Jack Johnson and Ben Harper know that these guitars are made to perform.
The excellent sound is not only due to modern technology, but to the combination of innovation and tradition. Cole Clark guitars have a 'Spanish' heel between the neck and the body. This technique is centuries old and demands more time from the luthier, because you start with the neck and then build the body more or less 'around it'. It is easier and faster to make the neck and body separately and put them together later.
The main advantage of this Spanish heel is that the connection is lighter and more resonant. Add to that some smart bracing and you get a perfect-sounding marriage between old and new. And to finish it all off, these guitars travel in a very cool Tweed suitcase.
