Gibson ES355 Blonde Lefty Conversion 1963
Deze Gibson heeft namelijk een complete gedaanteverwisseling ondergaan, want de gitaar verliet in 1963 de fabriek in Kalamzoo als een rechtshandige ES355 met een Bigsby, Varitone en Cherry Red finish. De ES355 was het absolute topmodel van de ES-lijn van Gibson, en was daarom uitgerust met luxe details als een ebben toets met binding, goudkleurige hardware en een tortoise slagplaat.
De volgende stap in het leven van deze Gibson werd gezet in 1966, toen de gitaar werd gekocht door de linkshandige Mick McCormick, gitarist van de band Minnesota Barking Ducks. Hij bracht de gitaar in 1967 terug naar de fabriek in Kalamazoo om de gitaar om te laten bouwen naar een linkshandig model, en hierbij werd de complete top van de gitaar vervangen door een Blonde top met alle bedieningselementen aan de andere zijde. Ook de body en hals bleven niet onberoerd; zij kregen een refinish naar zwart, en ook de binding werd vervangen zodat de positiemarkeringen zichtbaar bleven. Tenslotte werd de Bigsby vervangen door een stop bar.
Rond de eeuwwisseling kwam de gitaar in handen van Douglas Adams, auteur van 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy'. Hij was een fervent verzamelaar van gitaren, en had een collectie van tientallen linkshandige gitaren. De gitaar werd later nog nog twee keer verkocht, onder meer aan Fred 'Lefthand Freddy' Reining, en onderging nog enkele modificaties; er werd een strap button op de hoorn geplaatst, de stemmechanieken werden vervangen, en de gitaar onderging een refret. Ook de Varitone moest eraan geloven en werd verwijderd, terwijl The Pickguardian een nieuwe tortoise slagplaat maakte.
De gitaar wordt compleet geleverd met de originele onderdelen die na de conversie in 1967 op de gitaar zaten, vergezeld door meerdere pagina's documentatie die de historie van de gitaar bewijzen. Een zeer speciaal instrument met een zeer bijzondere historie!
This Gibson has undergone a complete transformation, because the guitar left the factory in Kalamazoo in 1963 as a right-handed ES355 with a Bigsby, Varitone and Cherry Red finish. The ES355 was the absolute top model of the Gibson ES line, and was therefore equipped with luxury details such as an ebony fingerboard with binding, gold-colored hardware and a tortoise pickguard.
The next step in the life of this Gibson was taken in 1966, when the guitar was bought by the left-handed Mick McCormick, guitarist of the band Minnesota Barking Ducks. He brought the guitar back to the factory in Kalamazoo in 1967 to have the guitar converted to a left-handed model, and in doing so the entire top of the guitar was replaced with a Blonde top with all the controls on the other side. The body and neck were not left untouched either; they were refinished to black, and the binding was also replaced so that the position markers remained visible. Finally, the Bigsby was replaced by a stop bar.
Around the turn of the century, the guitar came into the hands of Douglas Adams, author of 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy'. He was an avid guitar collector, and had a collection of dozens of left-handed guitars. The guitar was later sold twice more, including to Fred 'Lefthand Freddy' Reining, and underwent a few more modifications; a strap button was placed on the horn, the tuners were replaced, and the guitar was refretted. The Varitone was also removed, while The Pickguardian made a new tortoise pickguard.
The guitar comes complete with the original parts that were on the guitar after the conversion in 1967, accompanied by several pages of documentation that prove the history of the guitar. A very special instrument with a very intruiging history!
Diese Gibson hat eine komplette Transformation durchlaufen, denn die Gitarre verließ das Werk in Kalamazoo 1963 als Rechtshänder-ES355 mit Bigsby-, Varitone- und Cherry-Red-Lackierung. Die ES355 war das absolute Topmodell der Gibson ES-Reihe und verfügte daher über luxuriöse Details wie ein Ebenholzgriffbrett mit Binding, goldfarbene Hardware und ein Schlagbrett in Schildpattoptik.
Der nächste Schritt im Leben dieser Gibson erfolgte 1966, als der Linkshänder Mick McCormick, Gitarrist der Band Minnesota Barking Ducks, die Gitarre kaufte. Er brachte die Gitarre 1967 zurück ins Werk nach Kalamazoo, um sie in ein Linkshändermodell umbauen zu lassen. Dabei wurde die gesamte Decke der Gitarre durch eine in „Blond“ ersetzt, wobei sich alle Bedienelemente auf der anderen Seite befanden. Auch Korpus und Hals blieben nicht unberührt; sie wurden schwarz lackiert, und das Binding wurde ersetzt, sodass die Positionsmarkierungen sichtbar blieben. Schließlich wurde das Bigsby durch einen Stop Bar ersetzt.
Um die Jahrhundertwende gelangte die Gitarre in die Hände von Douglas Adams, dem Autor von „Per Anhalter durch die Galaxis“. Er war ein begeisterter Gitarrensammler und besaß eine Sammlung von Dutzenden Linkshändergitarren. Die Gitarre wurde später noch zweimal verkauft, unter anderem an Fred „Lefthand Freddy“ Reining, und mehreren weiteren Modifikationen unterzogen. Am Horn wurde ein Gurtknopf angebracht, die Stimmwirbel wurden ausgetauscht und die Gitarre wurde neu bundiert. Der Varitone wurde ebenfalls entfernt, während The Pickguardian ein neues Schlagbrett in Schildpattoptik anfertigte.
Die Gitarre wird komplett mit den Originalteilen geliefert, die sich nach dem Umbau 1967 noch darin befanden, zusammen mit mehreren Seiten Dokumentation, die die Geschichte der Gitarre belegen. Ein ganz besonderes Instrument mit einer einzigartigen Geschichte!
