Gibson Southern Jumbo SJ Sunburst 1946

A Gibson slope shoulder has been the first choice for singer-songwriters for decades. And it hardly seems to matter how much such a guitar has been through; especially when they are 'vintage,' they possess a certain magic that cannot be surpassed artificially.

At The Fellowship of Acoustics, a vintage Gibson always evokes warm feelings, with the Slope Shoulder models bringing out the inner singer-songwriter in everyone. The Southern Jumbo was introduced in 1942 as a more luxurious version of the popular but simply designed J45. The model found its place alongside the J45 and J50 in Gibson's lineup and garnered its fame in the guitar world primarily thanks to Hank Williams Sr.

This Southern Jumbo from 1946 marks the beginning of the era when the distinctive banner was no longer found on the headstock, though the elegant script logo still proudly adorns the headstock in full glory. The guitar's appearance is as we have come to expect from a vintage Gibson: beautifully weathered and with a dry and woody tone character. In addition to the clearly visible signs of wear on the body and neck, the guitar has several repaired cracks on the treble side of the lower bout, as well as on the top and the side of the body. Furthermore, the guitar has been refretted, and the nut and bridge saddle have also been replaced. Additionally, the bridge plate has been repaired, ensuring the strings are firmly anchored again for better tone transfer.

The Southern Jumbo features Gibson's premium woods, a 5-ply binding, and split parallelogram inlays on the bound fingerboard. The typical Gibson dry, woody tone character is naturally unmistakable and found only in vintage Gibson guitars. Warm and soft when played lightly, but capable of delivering plenty of punch and projection with a solid strum. Perfect for all types of flatpicking and rhythm guitar playing!
