This 1947 Gibson L5 represents the pinnacle of Gibson’s post-war archtop craft. With its beautiful sunburst finish, flamed maple/walnut neck and DeArmond FHC-C pickup, this is a guitar that marks the transition from the pre-war classics to the modern jazz era that was just around the corner.
The Gibson L5 has been regarded as the crowning glory of Gibson’s archtop series since its introduction in 1922, and this 1947 example shows why. In the years immediately following World War II, Gibson resumed production of their top models, combining traditional construction methods with new developments. This L5 features the classic 17-inch body with arched spruce top and maple back and sides, a size that set the standard for professional jazz guitars.
A special feature of this L5 is the presence of a DeArmond FHC-C pickup, one of the first successful magnetic pickups developed specifically for archtop guitars. Used by countless jazz guitarists in the 1940s and 1950s, this pickup gives the guitar both acoustic and electric capabilities. It’s a rare combination that makes this L5 a versatile instrument for both the traditional jazz purist and the guitarist looking for that warm, vintage electric sound.
The combination of the 17-inch body, quality wood, and expert construction results in a tone that is both full and defined. This L5 produces that classic archtop sound with a rich, warm tone that is perfectly suited to both chord playing and single-note melodies. The flamed maple and walnut neck provides a visual spectacle that Gibson would not match in later years. The C-profile of the neck and the 7.25" radius of the ebony fingerboard provide a comfortable playing experience that is characteristic of Gibsons from this period.
This L5 from 1947 exudes the authentic charm that only a guitar that is almost 80 years old can have. Over the years, the guitar has collected the necessary playing traces that testify to a rich musical life, but is still in very good condition. The sunburst finish shows the beautiful crackle and patina that vintage enthusiasts appreciate, but the top has not remained completely unscathed over the years. For example, there are a few repaired cracks that have been stabilized by cleats on the inside of the body, making the guitar stable again. A refret ensures that the playability will be fine for the coming years!
