The J35 was launched by Gibson in 1936 to boost the company's revenue and was built through 1942 as the predecessor to the J45. The guitar has the dry and woody sound that many consider the pinnacle of acoustic guitars, and this J35 undoubtedly demonstrates why this is the case!
The 1930s in the United States were marked by the Great Depression, and during this period, the Gibson Jumbo did not exactly sell well. To boost the company's revenue, the J35 was introduced in 1936. Essentially, this was a cheaper version of the Jumbo, with savings achieved primarily through a simpler and lighter construction. This resulted in a smooth and lively response, unlike the big and raw sound of the existing Jumbo.
The model was succeeded in 1942 by the illustrious J45, but it did not remain without changes during its six-year lifespan. The guitar was originally fitted with non-scalloped bracing, but the bracing on this J35 is scalloped. On the outside, a single cream-colored binding adorns both the front and back of the body. The guitar is also equipped with a mahogany neck with a Rounded profile and without extravagant ornamentation; only the simple dot inlay indicates your position on the rosewood fingerboard. The spruce top and mahogany back made the J35 a direct competitor to the Martin D18!
The guitar has had an overspray at some point, and several repairs have also been carried out over the years. For instance, we see a repaired crack near the pickguard on the top, two repaired cracks on the back, and a repaired crack on the underside of the body near the endpin. On the inside of the back, several braces have been re-glued, and the fingerboard end has also been re-glued. A refret was also performed at some point, and furthermore, the bridge saddle, bridge pins, and tuning machines have been replaced.
The guitar also features the typical Gibson crackle that is irresistible to vintage guitar enthusiasts. Additionally, the guitar possesses the typical dry and woody sound that makes the instrument so beloved for chord parts as well as for accompanying vocals, with optimal representation of the low and mid-range. For many, the sound of a vintage Gibson is the pinnacle of acoustic guitars, and this J35 undoubtedly demonstrates why this is the case!
