Gibson ES295 All Gold 1955

This 1955 ES295 is one of only 166 Gibson completed and shipped that year, and it shines bright with its stunning Bullion Gold finish!

The ES295 was introduced in 1952 as the more elaborately styled sibling of the ES175 and remained in production until 1959. While the ES175 has a more understated feel, the ES295 goes a step further with its striking gold finish, white pickguard with a gold floral pattern, and double parallelogram inlays on the fretboard. It's an instrument that's visually distinctive, yet shares the same solid hollow-body construction as its more understated counterpart.

During 1955, Gibson switched to a 20-fret neck, but this guitar still has 19, a detail that immediately dates it as an earlier 1955 model. The laminated maple body with a mahogany neck and two original P90 pickups deliver the warm, full sound for which hollow-body Gibsons from this era are so beloved. The P90s have their characteristic bite and presence, yet remain soft enough for the more tame jazz tones the ES295 was originally designed for.

The most striking feature of this guitar is, of course, the Bullion Gold finish, which has developed a beautiful crackle pattern over the years. The guitar retains its original finish, but it's hidden by a later-applied clear overspray. This aging gives the guitar a look that's simply impossible to replicate, and proves that this instrument has been thoroughly enjoyed over the past seventy years. Furthermore, the guitar has been refretted, so it's ready for years to come!
